Potatoes on rice, you say? Damn straight!! Carbs on carbs on carbs are nothing to be shy of! Trust me! You will love this combination!

Gamja jorim is a braised potato dish with a sticky sweet sauce that is a simple comfort food for any carb-loving foodie. The potatoes are cooked to utter perfection by browning first, then simmering in a delectable broth full of garlic, bell pepper, chilis and onion. The use of soy sauce and syrups brings the broth down to a sticky, sultry glaze that coats the potatoes and then drips ever-so-slightly onto the rice.

The rice! Oh the rice! Bap is created from multiple types of grains. The combination of brown rices, black rice and barley create a terrifically nutty texture. The bite of it goes perfectly with the gamja jorim, and is a excellent vehicle for capturing every last bit of sauce.

We have already made this twice! Even the kids loved it! Mind you, we are not the bravest of chili eaters, so I only used two jalapenos, then spiced ours up just a notch with a bit of spicy soy sauce dressing (also from the book). With a bit of mild kimchi on the side, dinner was a pure delight!

I hope you'll get the book and cook along with me! I'd love to hear your thoughts and if you are enjoying it as much as I am. The experience is so much bigger that the cooking itself. Reading the text, listening to Joanne's stories, tuning into her podcast appearances, is all a heart-tugging and eye-opening journey into the human experience of a culture that I truly knew nothing about. It's an opportunity for growth and absorbing the wisdom of others. And by cooking the food, enjoying the food, savoring the food, you feel connected to a world outside of your own. And that is everything we need right about now.
